Madewell, is one of those brands offering cute, effortlessly chic basics at reasonable prices. What isn't as widely known is that it is an offshoot of J. Crew purveyor of effortlessly preppy-chic-ish basics at semi reasonable prices. Though J. Crew is not mentioned in the company history customers are assured of the quality they can expect...the (original) company was founded in 1937! They made quality work wear! In other words, we are the real deal, buy our cute tank tops!
Whatever the real back story, from a company founded on the legs of a lesser known Carhart or Dickies, you can expect un-fashion made fashionable like this hobo/messenger bag.
There really aren't any good detail shots on the site (maybe that too is part of the "too cool" authentic niche..."sure we have a website, but you can't see anything that well, and you have to call us to buy anything"...sort of a web equivalent of a pretty, but inattentive sales person) so these will have to suffice.
What I like is that this seems to be the sort of bag I have been looking for. A sort of un-messenger messenger bag. A large hobo that can easily be worn cross body, but doesn't look like a guys bag, or something for school.
Made from leather, in at least 2 colors, I feel like it will be decent quality for what it is (based on parent brand J.Crew's history) and serve the purpose of a day bag that leaves 2 hands free, and alleviates the one shoulder slump from a traditional shoulder bag. the bag has a lived in quality, the leather looking softly wrinkled and worn in...almost like it's been washed. There is an outer zipper pocket, as well as side pockets, and the strap can be adjusted for length.
You can see the Old School Hobo (and other looks) on Madewell1937, and if you like what you see, it can be ordered for a very reasonable sounding $198 by calling 866-544-1937.
